I’ll never forget one particular life shaping comment made to me, as a teen, when I was with a buddy of mine. Can’t quite remember what we were doing, but we were out having a good time. He said something to me that seemed so inconsequential at the time, but it stuck with me.

Now, he was more like a brother to me than just a friend, so his words would carry weight whether I acknowledged it or not at the time.

A we were walking around he just looked at me and said “You know, if you would just stand up straight when you were walking, you would have a much better time.” Something along those lines.

From that moment forward I started paying attention to my posture. Basically making sure that when I was walking around I was standing straight with good posture and by God, I did start having a better time.

It is the little things.

In college, I was a math major. I particularly remember an older professor who always seemed to me to be in a bad mood. It didn’t help matters that he taught one of the hardest math classes –  differential equations.

Anyway, one day I was riding the elevator and he got on with me. It was early in the week and he looked at me and asked. How are you doing.

I said I wish it were Friday. What he said next to me stopped me in my tracks. He basically looked at me and just said you know you’re wishing your life away.

That really threw me for loop and from that day forward I don’t believe I’ve ever said “I wish it were” another day ever again. I just enjoyed every day as much as I could – living in the moment.

That one brief encounter changed my attitude for the rest of my life. I wish I could remember his name and I wish I could go back and thank him for that.

It was definitely something that has shaped my life.
